Restless Development is excited to announce the appointment of Nuria Mshare as the organization’s new Hub Director in Tanzania. Nuria brings a wealth of experience in youth-led development and a long-standing passion for creating impact in communities across the country.
Nuria’s journey in development began early. In 2002, she represented children at the Tanzania Model United Nations General Assembly, organized by the Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA). Reflecting on that experience, she says it opened her eyes to the challenges of poverty and inequality, particularly for marginalized groups such as youth, children, and women
That moment showed me the power of youth engagement as a catalyst for change, even in the face of immense challenges. It planted a seed that grew into a lasting commitment to inclusive development and youth leadership, guiding me to where I am today
Highlighting the potential of young Tanzanians, Nuria shared her enthusiasm for their creativity, courage, and determination.
Across the country, young people are embracing technology, stepping confidently into leadership roles, and actively driving change in their communities. They are not waiting for permission to lead, they are already solving problems and shaping Tanzania’s future
Here are some of the questions Nuria answered as she stepped into her new role:
What first inspired you to work in development, and how has that passion evolved to bring you to this role in Tanzania?
My passion for development began early in my life, particularly in 2002 when I represented children at the Tanzania Model United Nations General Assembly organized by Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA). Being part of discussions on global challenges such as poverty and inequality was a defining moment. It opened my eyes to how deeply these issues affect marginalized groups, especially youth, children, and women. What stayed with me most was seeing the power of youth engagement as a catalyst for change, even in the face of immense challenges. That experience planted a seed that grew into a lasting commitment to inclusive development and youth leadership, ultimately guiding me to take on country-level work and bringing me to this role.
Young people are at the heart of Restless Development’s mission—what excites you most about the power and potential of young Tanzanians today?
What excites me most about young Tanzanians today is their limitless potential and determination to shape their own future. Across the country, I see young people embracing technology, stepping confidently into leadership roles, and actively championing change within their communities. Whether they are using digital tools to amplify their voices, organizing at the grassroots level, or challenging long-standing social norms, young Tanzanians are not waiting for permission to lead — they are already solving problems and driving progress. Their creativity, courage, and sense of responsibility give me great confidence in the power of youth-led development to transform Tanzania.
What lessons from your own journey would you share with a young person who wants to create change but doesn’t know where to start?
From my own journey, I’ve learned that creating change rarely begins with having all the answers. Often, you discover your purpose along the way, sometimes by realizing what you don’t want while doing something else. The most important step is simply to start, to commit fully to whatever opportunity is in front of you, and to show up with intention. Small actions matter, and those early steps, however modest they seem, build clarity, confidence, and direction. Be present in the process, respect your progress, and trust that purpose reveals itself through action.
As Country Director, what impact do you hope young people will be leading and shaping through Restless Development Tanzania in the next few years?
As Country Director, I envision young people across Tanzania confidently finding and using their voices to lead meaningful change in their communities. Through Restless Development Tanzania, I hope to see youth not only participating, but shaping decisions, leading initiatives that influence policy, strengthen communities, and create new economic and social opportunities. I see young Tanzanians stepping into leadership across diverse fields, driving solutions to local challenges, and transforming their environments in ways that are sustainable, inclusive, and youth-led.
What drives you personally—what keeps you hopeful and motivated in this work every day?
What keeps me hopeful and motivated every day is witnessing young people take charge of their own lives and futures. There is something deeply powerful about seeing young girls confidently speak up for their right to education, protection, and opportunity, and watching young people claim their space as leaders in their communities. Seeing these moments unfold often against significant odds reminds me why this work matters and fuels my belief in a fairer, more inclusive future shaped by the courage and determination of youth.
Quick one — what’s something people would be surprised to learn about you outside of work?
One thing that often surprises people is that outside of my development work, I’m a professional baker. My love for cake turned into a real skill — I bake and decorate cakes for fun, and I’ve even sold wedding cakes and cakes for all occasions. Whenever I need a creative escape or a moment of calm, you’ll likely find me hiding in the kitchen, completely absorbed in cakes and frosting.
Join us in welcoming Nuria Mshare to the Restless Development family as our new Hub Director in Tanzania. We’re thrilled to embark on this journey together, continuing to create impact, champion youth leadership, and strengthen youth-led civil society.
