The Beginning of Solidarity Forever’s Journey
The “Solidarity Forever” group began their journey with a shared desire for change. They, like many others, faced the harsh realities of unemployment and the challenges that came with relying on unstable sources of income. When they joined the SET program, a partnership between Restless Development and Swiss Contact, they saw it as a way to turn their lives around. The program focused on modern poultry farming practices, and over the course of 8 months, the group received in-depth training on building chicken coops, managing poultry health, understanding feeding systems, and even marketing and financial management.
From Training to Practice: Building a Business
Armed with new knowledge, Solidarity Forever was ready to put their training into action. The group pooled their savings and purchased 200 chicks to start their poultry business. The beginning was difficult—disease outbreaks threatened their flock, and the group struggled to overcome these early obstacles. However, they were determined, and the practical training they had received gave them the tools to tackle these challenges. They learned to apply the right strategies, manage their resources wisely, and continue moving forward.
Overcoming Obstacles Together
As with any new venture, the path was not always smooth. The group faced setbacks, including disease outbreaks that affected their chickens. Despite these challenges, Solidarity Forever showed resilience. They used the knowledge from their training to find solutions, and with each hurdle they overcame, their business grew stronger. The group’s unity and shared determination allowed them to stay focused on their goal: creating a sustainable business and a better future for themselves.
Success and Growth: A Thriving Poultry Business
Today, Solidarity Forever has expanded their business to 500 chickens and earned 1,250,000 Tanzanian shillings from selling 125 chickens in just two months. What started as a small initiative has now become a thriving poultry business, providing employment and income for its members. The group credits the SET program for equipping them with the skills to turn their vision into a reality. With hard work and dedication, they have proven that young people, when given the right tools and opportunities, can overcome the challenges of unemployment and create lasting change.
We started with just 200 chicks, but the knowledge we gained from the SET training has helped us grow to 500 chickens. With this knowledge, we’ve learned how to manage risks, improve feeding, and keep our flock healthy.
