Creating supportive learning environments for adolescents to thrive.
Sambhav was a three year project implemented by Restless Development Nepal in partnership with UNICEF from 2016 to 2018. The project worked with adolescents, schools, teachers, parents, and local communities to improve learning outcomes, strengthen social inclusion, and support school retention among young people, particularly girls and marginalized students.
The project focused on creating engaging and inclusive after school learning spaces where young people could strengthen their confidence, leadership, and life skills while improving participation in education.
Strengthening inclusion through youth led learning
Sambhav promoted peer learning, child participation, and inclusive education practices across schools and communities. Through homework support sessions, life skills camps, sports, extracurricular activities, and child clubs, adolescents were encouraged to actively participate in learning and community engagement.
The project also created opportunities for young people to discuss issues affecting their lives, including child marriage, caste discrimination, menstrual stigma, gender inequality, and school participation. Young people led awareness activities within their schools and communities, contributing to stronger social inclusion and safer learning environments.
Achievements
Through the Sambhav project, adolescents across 10 districts participated in after school learning and leadership initiatives that contributed to improved attendance, retention, participation, and confidence among students. Marginalized girls and boys reported feeling more comfortable and confident participating in school activities and engaging with peers and teachers.
The project also strengthened collaboration between schools, communities, and local governments to sustain youth friendly and inclusive education approaches. Several schools continued after school activities through School Improvement Plans and local support mechanisms even after the project period ended.
Sambhav also contributed to improved awareness around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, life skills, and social inclusion among adolescents. Through peer led approaches and community engagement, the project supported young people to become more confident, engaged, and active within their schools and communities.
