Fridah’s Story

When I was introduced to the Youth Savings Loans Association (YSLA) group I was inspired to change my situation

– Fridah Banda

Fridah Banda, a young woman from Ngala Village in Chadiza, Zambia, proved that with determination, access and hard work, financial freedom is achievable.

Fridah joined the YSLA in her community in 2023, a decision that completely changed her life. Starting with a small savings pot, she began making and selling sweet scones to her community to increase her savings. Her consistency saw her business and savings increase every day. Soon she grew what started as an uncertain business venture to a thriving source of income.

Life before the savings group was hard, I struggled to afford basic things such as lotion, food, clothes and even sanitary towels and was too embarrassed to ask my parents for help because I knew they were struggling too.

But Fridah did not stop there, instead, she combined the profit from her business to the savings from the YSLA group to purchase a pig, building towards her dream of owning a piggery and butchery. Now a proud pig owner, Fridah aims to increase the number of pigs and grow her piggery. With her family cheering on her hard work and worthy achievement, Fridah is motivated to keep going as she works to support her family with necessities at home like food and groceries when there is need

Fridah’s story is an inspiration to other YSLA group members and young people in her community on how financial literacy and entrepreneurship can empower young people to take control of their own futures. She encourages other young people to get involved in savings groups, as it not only provides financial stability but also keeps them away from harmful activities like seeking money through
unhealthy means.

Looking towards the future, Fridah has set her sights on furthering her education and pursuing a career as a nurse. With her determination and drive, there is no doubt that Fridah will achieve her goals and continue to inspire others in her community to strive for success.
