Improving food and nutrition outcomes of vulnerable households through strengthening climate resilience, fostering financial inclusion and access to clean energy.

Foster Climate-Resilient, and Inclusive Development Through Better Agricultural Practices.

Addressing key issues in Sierra Leone, such as food insecurity, malnutrition, limited access to health and nutrition services, and inadequate climate resilience in Kenema, Karene, Pujehun, and Tonkolili districts in Sierra Leone.

By 2028, the project will finalize a map of resource-poor households most impacted by climate change. Interventions will be launched, with a specific focus on purposefully engaging 900 adolescents in the target communities, guided by local community members.

The program includes training for health workers and community volunteers, stronger nutrition and WASH services, and efforts to empower women and youth while improving clean energy access and market systems.

The intended impact is to strengthen food and nutrition security among vulnerable rural households by addressing climate-induced food instability and resource scarcity, while enhancing resilience, sustainability, and inclusive community development.

Key benefits include:

  • Improved access to climate-smart agricultural practices, tools, and technologies to enhance productivity and livelihoods.
  • Capacity-building activities to equip community members with sustainable farming practices, resource management, and climate adaptation strategies.
  • Increased agricultural yields, leading to better food security and nutrition outcomes for families.
  • Enhanced adaptive capacity, preparing targeted groups to cope with climate shocks, reducing vulnerability, and improving recovery capabilities.
  • Empowerment through involvement in decision-making processes, fostering ownership and greater agency in managing resources and livelihoods.
  • Adolescents will benefit from improved nutrition, education, and health, along with skill development and opportunities to play an active role in shaping their futures and communities.
  • Access to finance for supporting small businesses.
  • Improved access to WASH services.
  • Conservation and utilization of forest resources, including honey, snails, mushrooms, and medicinal plants.
  • Highlighting the needs of marginalized groups may lead to increased support from policymakers, ensuring their voices are heard in climate action and resource allocation discussions.
