As part of the EU-funded GreenShift project, the Youth Advocacy Group from Janakpurdham Metropolitan City, CARD Nepal, facilitated school-level cleaning campaigns and established dedicated Plastic Waste Corners in two newly designated Climate Smart Schools: Shree Janta Secondary School in Shivpur (Ward 19) and Shree Sarswati Secondary School in Kanakpatti (Ward 17).

These activities are part of a broader GreenShift initiative to build climate-conscious school environments by empowering students to lead by example. The program included student-led cleaning activities across school premises, interactive sessions on waste segregation, and the installation of plastic-specific waste collection corners. Students and staff learned to separate plastic waste from other types of waste, reinforcing daily habits that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable learning environment.
Speaking about her experience, Chandani Kumari, a Grade 9 student at Shree Janta Ma.Vi., said, “We felt proud to lead the cleaning activity. The new waste corner will help us continue this every day.” Jayanti Kumari Yadav, a Grade 9 student at Shree Sarswati Ma.Vi., added, “This cleaning campaign has made us responsible. We came to know that cleaning alone is not enough. We need to establish waste corners and promote recycling as an economic opportunity. We want to spread this idea to our homes and community too.”

By actively involving students in implementation, the initiative promoted local ownership and long-term behavioral change. These efforts align with GreenShift’s vision of promoting circular economy practices through climate-smart schools and youth leadership.
This intervention follows CARD Nepal’s ongoing contributions to the GreenShift project, including market linkage workshops, youth training on plastic waste reuse, and broader awareness-raising activities. Through such grassroots efforts, the GreenShift project continues to create ripple effects across communities, empowering young people to lead the charge for a more circular and climate-resilient Nepal.
