On March 7, 2025, Restless Development joined the vibrant Naguru Go Down community in Nakawa Division to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD).
The pre-event, held under the global theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” was a powerful tribute to grassroots women working hard every day to overcome tough challenges.
Organised in partnership with key groups like Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), African women and youth Action for Development (AWYAD), African Women and Girls Organization for Total Knowledge (AWAGO), Reach Out Mbuya, Opportunity Bank, and others, the event highlighted the voices and resilience of women from Naguru Go Down, a community facing issues like poverty, gender-based violence, and limited access to services. These included women with disabilities, women living with HIV, and single mothers, many of whom run small businesses like frying cassava to support their families.
The day started with a spirited community march, led by a brass band from Reach Out Mbuya. These included women with disabilities, women living with HIV, and single mothers alongside representatives from Restless Development, NGOS, and government agencies to show unity and strength. A cultural dance by the Ebenezer Women Group kicked off the celebration, followed by opening words from Hon. Nusurah Mbabazi, who promised continued support for grassroots women and their empowerment. Part of the celebration, up to 10 women received startup cash grants to boost their businesses. These included women living with disabilities, HIV, and those raising children alone. The event also honoured women who had completed financial literacy training, showing that knowledge and confidence are key tools for economic independence.
One of the key highlights was a panel discussion on “Breaking Barriers – Advancing Women’s Financial Inclusion and Economic Growth.” In his remarks, Mr. Godfrey Luyombya, a keynote speaker, cited financial challenges as one of the leading causes of gender-based violence. He called for more support from communities and organisations to help women break free from cycles of abuse and poverty.
Restless Development, known for working closely with young people and marginalised communities, used this platform to stand in solidarity with Naguru women and push for long-term solutions—including better access to education, mental health services, and opportunities for women and girls to participate in decision-making.

The day also featured music, dance and drama performances that painted women’s stories, struggles and dreams. These artistic pieces served as both inspiration and a call to action. Ms. Mukayisire, another passionate voice at the event, reminded attendees that true empowerment starts with economic freedom and self-belief. She urged women to rise beyond survival and become home and community leaders.
International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated every March 8, is a global day celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It also marks a call to action to accelerate women’s equality.
