GreenShift Project Onboards Youth Groups for Environmental Advocacy

In a major step toward strengthening youth leadership and community engagement, the GreenShift Project has successfully completed the selection of three Youth Advocacy Groups (YAGs) for its second year. One youth group from each of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City, Kohalpur Municipality, and Bharatpur Metropolitan City has been chosen to lead advocacy efforts on plastic waste reduction and circular economy initiatives in their respective communities.

The Onboard Process

The process began with a call for proposals, followed by outreach and orientation sessions conducted in the three municipalities. These sessions provided interested youth groups with insights into GreenShift’s objectives, advocacy focus, and the application process.

After receiving numerous proposals, a thorough evaluation was conducted to assess the groups’ commitment, capacity, and proposed initiatives. Shortlisted groups were invited for interviews, and one winning group was selected from each city based on their potential to drive impactful advocacy efforts.

Each of these youth groups will receive technical guidance and capacity-building training to effectively implement their plastic waste reduction and circular economy initiatives. Additionally, each group will be awarded a grant of Rs. 2 Lakh, enabling them to execute their projects with sustainable community engagement.

Empowering Youth for a Circular Economy

As environmental challenges continue to escalate, youth-led advocacy plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable change. Through this initiative, GreenShift is investing in young leaders who will champion circular economy solutions, waste management innovations, and community-driven environmental sustainability.

The onboarded Youth Advocacy Groups will not only implement localized solutions but also contribute to policy discussions, awareness campaigns, and grassroots mobilization for a cleaner, more sustainable Nepal.

“By empowering youth, we are creating long-term sustainability champions who will drive climate action and waste reduction at the community level,” said Karuna Thapa, Program Coordinator from Restless Development Nepal.

With these dynamic youth groups leading the way, GreenShift continues to pave the path for youth-driven environmental advocacy and a future with reduced plastic pollution.
