Restless Development Sierra Leone, through the EmpowerHer project, is transforming the lives of adolescent girls in Moyamba by providing essential back-to-school packages and holistic support.
With funding from the Stone Family Foundation and the Government of Sierra Leone, the initiative distributed school materials and financial aid to 250 girls—50 out-of-school and 200 in-school students at St Joseph’s and Harford School for Girls.
Each package included books, pens, pencils, mathematical sets, backpacks, and cash, tailored to the girls’ educational levels. This comprehensive support ensures that adolescent girls not only return to school but also stay engaged and motivated to learn.
Build Confidence and Community Support
The EmpowerHer project goes beyond material support. From March 2025 to May 2026, the programme fostered a positive shift in attitudes among caregivers and the wider community. Through radio programmes and Positive Parenting sessions, parents have come to recognise the value of girls’ education and the opportunities provided by the Digital Learning Centre. Many caregivers, once hesitant, now actively encourage their daughters’ participation, even reducing household chores to prioritize schoolwork.
Role model sessions held by the project team further inspired girls, connecting their aspirations to real success stories of women who have overcome similar challenges. This sparked new ambitions among participants, with girls expressing confidence in pursuing secondary education and specific careers in the Sciences
Strengthened Schools and Community Collaboration
Institutional partnerships have been key to EmpowerHer’s impact. Link Teacher training has enabled schools to better support girls, monitor attendance, and provide mentorship. Regular follow-ups and close coordination with caregivers have contributed to reduced absenteeism and improved student wellbeing. Community leaders and school boards have also embraced the initiative, reinforcing their commitment to girls’ education and safeguarding. EmpowerHer is now widely recognized as a trusted and effective programme within Moyamba district.
Measurable Results and Lessons Learned
After one year, the results speak for themselves. EmpowerHer achieved full enrolment and high participation, with 90% of girls actively engaging in sessions—up from 20% at baseline. Caregiver support rose from 32% to 85%, and over 80% of girls demonstrated improved digital skills, STEM knowledge, and understanding of sexual and reproductive health.
However, the journey has not been without challenges. Economic pressures and social norms continue to impact girls’ participation. The programme has learned that sustained engagement with caregivers and alignment with school systems are essential for lasting change.
Power Up stands as a testament to what’s possible when communities, schools, and organizations join forces to empower the next generation of leaders in Sierra Leone.
