The Horizon Project, a youth-led initiative tackling the mental health crisis among young people will provide 333 hours of free or low-cost trauma-informed counselling to young people who might otherwise have no access to critical mental health support.
Youth mental health challenges are on the rise in Northern Ireland, with the prevalence of anxiety and depression among young people 25% higher than in other UK regions. The Horizon Project is working to ensure young people receive the care they need before reaching a crisis point.
Caoimhin Mac an Ultaigh, from The Horizon Project, emphasized the urgency of this initiative:
“We don’t want the next generation to grow up thinking youth suicide and crisis are just part of life. Every young person deserves access to support before they reach breaking point. This funding brings us closer to making that a reality.”
The mental health crisis among young people in Northern Ireland remains a pressing issue, with studies highlighting alarming rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide. By prioritising early intervention and community-based support, The Horizon Project aims to create a lasting impact on youth mental well-being.
