Restless Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Perry Maddox as our new CEO.

Perry's appointment follows an extensive recruitment process, which involved consultations with staff and young people across the agency's global Hubs and an online survey asking young people what qualities they expect in our new CEO.

Perry, 37, brings 15 years of expertise working in the youth and community development sector and is currently Restless Development’s Chief Operating Officer. Perry previously worked as Restless Development’s Uganda Country Director; led grassroots youth initiatives in Nicaragua; and led training of Peace Corps volunteers in community development across Paraguay. He currently serves on the board of Accountable Now, a global standard driving civil society transparency across the development sector.

He replaces Nik Hartley OBE, who will step down in March 2018 after almost 20 years with Restless Development. Perry will start his new role on 1st February 2018.

Perry, said:

“I am honoured, humbled and excited to help lead Restless Development. We live in an era of Peak Youth – now and for just a few more decades to come, we will have the largest youth population the world has ever experienced. This generation of young people are leading change in their communities and across the world, whether that's fighting child marriage in their villages in Nepal or bringing Ebola to zero in Sierra Leone. We only have a short window to make the most of this opportunity.

“As the new CEO, I will support Restless Development to continue to do what we do best - unleash the power, leadership and agency of young people to bring about positive change in our world.”

Nalini Paul, Director of Restless Development's India Hub, said:

"Perry's appointment as CEO is great news. He is Restless to the core and I am looking forward to working with him on making our new strategy a success. As a leader he has always invoked a sense of confidence, and his support to help me lead Restless Development's work in India has proved invaluable."

Martin Hayman, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Restless Development, said:

“Perry excelled through our rigorous recruitment process against some highly impressive competition from across the sector. Over the last six months we worked with young people, staff and volunteers across the globe to identify what qualities they want in our next CEO – we have no doubt that Perry meets these expectations.

“During his time at Restless Development, Perry has already proven himself a leader, driving award winning multi-million pound partnerships with donors; overseeing Restless Development’s response to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone; growing the impact and income of our work in Uganda as country director; and acting up as CEO during Nik's paternity leave. Perry has also helped lead and shape the sector beyond Restless Development by pushing for greater accountability, resulting in our receiving the Bond Transparency Award earlier this year.

“Perry has been one of the principal architects of our ambitious new strategy and, importantly, lives and breathes our values. The Board has no doubt that he will continue to provide the Agency with the leadership, energy and excitement so ably demonstrated to date by Nik."
