Our efforts in Sierra Leone are growing day by day; our volunteer mobilisers have gone through extensive training to build their knowledge around Ebola, equipping them with vital skills in order to respond to the Ebola crisis.
By using our already established network of Sierra Leonean volunteers, and expanding upon this network, over 1,700 volunteers have been mobilised, bringing lifesaving messages to over 3 million people, in the largest social mobilisation ever to take place in Sierra Leone.
The Posters below have been produced by the Social Mobilisation Action Committee (SMAC), a consortium we are part of, funded by the Department of International Development. These resources are currently being used by our volunteers in communities in Sierra Leone to tackle myths about Ebola, and reduce the stigma and fear surrounding Ebola survivors. Their purpose is to celebrate survivors and support them to re-integrate into communities after they have spent time away in treatment centres, recovering from the virus.
The inspirational efforts of our Sierra Leonean volunteers, who have devoted themselves to tackling the virus at community level, will play an extremely important role in bringing Ebola under control.
Our Emergency Coordinator Sara Benavent speaks from Freetown about the current situation on the ground:
“Community behaviour change is essential to stopping the outbreak, and our volunteers are working hard to influence this. With the right prevention and quarantines, the virus won’t survive.”
Our team in Sierra Leone continues to work tirelessly, travelling around the country to fully support our heroic young mobilisers. With the aim to empower communities with knowledge about the virus, so that they are able to take action against it themselves, our staff and volunteers have been fully supporting local people.
