I chose Restless because I wanted to work with young people and to go back to Tanzania and improve my Swahili. I had been once before on a university trip when I was 20. We helped to build houses for a charity called Light in Africa. During my placement I put on a series of HIV and AIDS awareness festivals for the local community. A lot of my time was spent talking with community groups, organising guest speakers and performers (including Dance4life), liaising with schools to see if the kids wanted to get involved. I also taught lessons in HIV and AIDS awareness and life skills at the local school. I loved living with the family in the town. The hardest bit was when I was in the village as my Swahili wasn’t great. My partner was a Tanzanian girl called Adelaide. She was awesome and we’re still in touch. In the future, we plan to set up an NGO working with socially excluded kids in Tanzania.




I am very involved with the Restless Development Alumni Network, and in fact contribute strategically to its development through my role as Fundraising Advisor on the Alumni Committee. I am also a Champion for the Live Below The Line campaign, which involves recruiting people to take on the challenge of living on £1 a day for 5 days. In seeing the Alumni Network come together, I have seen the amazing capacity the Alumni of Restless Development hold. Former Alumni have gone on to do amazing things with their lives, and everyone has the opportunity to bring this together and engage people.



For the past two years I have been a consultant at The Social Investment Consultancy, where I have worked with a wide range of organisations from global health charities specialising in neglected tropical diseases and those working to affect re-offending rates in the UK to womens’ empowerment foundations and organisations focusing on ethnic minority business networks. Our work includes projects examining ways to diversify a charity’s income stream, monitor and evaluate an organisation’s impact and building internal capacity. I also coordinate our insight trips, designing trips for philanthropists, investors and advisors to look at opportunities to create impact in countries experiencing high growth such as Rwanda. The best thing is the variety. Normally if you work for an NGO you go into the same place each day and have a fixed role, but I get to work with all different organisations.
