On 12th August 2010 Restless Development in Sierra Leone launched the International Year of Youth, as part of a programme of events being developed by the Youth Employment Secretariat, the UN, and various Non Governmental Organisations. This exciting event marked the beginning of a year which will focus on youth entrepreneurship in Sierra Leone – an area in which Restless Development plays a key role in the country through our Volunteer Peer Educator-led and Ex-Volunteers activities. Throughout the event, Restless Development was noted as the key development agency - leading the way in enabling young people to have improved livelihoods.
During the launch event, Keith Wright, Principal Technical Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme, stated
“The world recognizes that youth have ability. You are not lacking ability, you are lacking opportunity. And that is what we are all working to create."
Our Country Director in Sierra Leone, Nii Doodo Dodoo, made a statement giving real life examples of young people making use of their entrepreneurship skills, showing proof that given these opportunities young people can and do succeed:
“Young people, when guided, can become the educators, facilitiators, and policy makers of today, not tomorrow.”
Over the course of the coming year, the International Year of Youth will be marked by a nationwide Youth Express Dialogue Forum on Entrepreneurship. The forum will expose youth around the country to Sierra Leonean entrepreneurs, allowing young people to learn about successful business developed in country. Restless Development is proud to play a leading role in these upcoming activities, as well as continuing our own work in creating livelihoods opportunities for young people.
